Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Players are granted the right to contest certain calls from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
